DEPTFORD’S first boules team are hoping to host tournaments on their new pentanque court with players from a French village.
The team were launched on Friday when the new court in Charlotte Turner Gardens off Benbow Street was christened.
The event was held as part of the 10th birthday celebrations of the Twinkle Park Trust, which has led a raft of improvements to the gardens and the award-winning Twinkle Park next door.
Carol Kenna from the resident-led trust said: “The boules team are going to twin up with the Pepys Estate Bowls Team.
One of the residents lives half of the time in Saint-Geyrac, a village near Perigueux.
The team there are really keen to come over and play here.
We have a vision that it could build up into a town twinning.”
She said boules was “a really fun game”.
She added: “Although it can be played with great skill it can also be enjoyed by everyone.”
Ms Kenna, who also runs the Greenwich Mural Workshop, said: “The court was part of the final stages of improvements to the park to create more activities for people.
“Since forming in 1999 the trust has raised more than one-and-a-quarter million pounds to fund the improvements to Twinkle Park and Charlotte Turner Gardens.”
She thanked supporters, including the Sir John Evelyn Charity, Greenwich council and its Cleansweep department for all their help.
On Saturday the trust also hosted Sounds In The Park in Twinkle Park, which featured pond-dipping and performances from the Paul Zec Jazz Quartet, the Nostalgia Steel Band and St Nix Chics.
The event was part of Greenwich council’s Create Festival, held to celebrate the borough’s status as a host for the London 2012 Olympics.
